Why an inbox gets halved or paused

The bounce checks that slow down or stop an inbox, and how to recover.

Updated 20 October 2026

Outly watches each inbox's last week of sending. When too many emails fail permanently (the address doesn't exist, or the receiving server rejects it), it slows the inbox down before mailbox providers start to distrust it.

  1. healthy: under 2% hard failures. The inbox sends its full daily allowance.
  2. warning: over 2%. The card says Sending halved and the inbox sends half its allowance.
  3. critical: over 5%. The card says Sending paused and the inbox sends nothing until it recovers.

Below 20 attempts in the week there isn't enough to judge, so the inbox stays healthy. Temporary errors such as Google's rate limits don't count; only permanent failures do.

Getting back to healthy

  1. Clean the list: verify the remaining leads in the campaign and remove anything Invalid or Risky. See Verify email addresses.
  2. On Accounts, click Check connection to re-test the inbox.
  3. As older failures drop out of the one-week window and new sends succeed, the inbox returns to healthy by itself.

Tip

When a bounce notice arrives, Outly marks that address invalid and pauses it in every campaign, so the same dead address isn't emailed again.
